probably i don't need to explain you who Pandit Pran Nath is here. he is well known as the master of La Monte Young. i just find this cd in NY in 2 weeks ago, when i walked around.
i discovered him when i discovered La Monte Young. although i like La Monte Young's almost works, i don't prefer his vocal even he learnt it by Pandit Pran Nath in India. because it's just fake of Pandit Pran Nath for me...
i've loved Indian vocal music since when i was a junior high school boy. when i went to an indian shop in Kobe with my friends, they played this kind of music with burning incense. then i impressed this music and atmosphere very much. suddenly my room changed to like an Indian freak's room! i put a big Siva's picture and some Indian cloths on the wall, burnt incense, played many Indian traditional music and was lost in fake-meditation. hahaha... i was so stupid! i discovered Indian traditional music first time, when i was about 10 years old. i discovered it from one tv documentary program. then i was interested in it... i remember it was the sitar music. especially i was so interested in one sound in this music, it was the sound of tambura. of course i didn't know which instrument made this drone sound then. when i started to listen to many Indian traditional music, i found that sound was by tambura! after that, i prefer listening to many Indian vocal music with tambura and tabla same as this album.
on this album, Terry Riley plays tabla. so tabla playing is not so much technical... it's better for me!! also La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela play tambura. although of course Pandit Pran Nath's vocal is great, i feel this album is very "rock" atmosphere... the one of reason may Western people play with Pandit Pran Nath... maybe something are so different from the real Indian music... so their playing is not meditational for me, more like "acid-folk" atmospher! anyway it's the one of the best acid-folk record for me!!!
